MEET RITA
At just 33 years old, Rita embodies resilience and determination as she navigates life’s challenges after arriving in Australia as a refugee from Iraq. Married with two young children, ages 6 and 1, she has faced significant obstacles but remains steadfast in her commitment to her family and personal growth.
In Iraq, Rita earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and worked as a social worker. However, her life took a traumatic turn when an explosive device detonated on a bus transporting Christian students to the university, resulting in severe injuries to her hand. Following four surgeries, she was left with limited mobility. This year, she faced additional adversity when a fall broke her foot, necessitating a wheelchair and crutches, along with more surgeries and regular hospital visits. Despite these setbacks, she continues to care for her two children, including her baby son, all while managing the family’s financial strain from rent and medical expenses.
Currently living in Craigieburn, Rita’s family pays over a thousand dollars per month in rent, which has added to the stress of their situation. Yet, amidst these challenges, Rita remains focused on her personal development, particularly her English language skills. Arriving in Australia with no knowledge of English, she sought assistance from WCIG’s training services, enrolling in the Certificate I in English as an Additional Language (EAL) program in November 2022.
After successfully completing the first certificate, Rita transitioned to an online Certificate II in EAL to better accommodate her responsibilities as a mother. WCIG Training Services provided Rita access to classes and essential printed learning resources. Rita’s tuition fees were waived due to her family’s financial hardship.
Rita’s positive attitude and unwavering commitment to her education have been remarkable. Despite her circumstances, she approaches her learning with gratitude, acknowledging the support she has received from WCIG. “I am determined to improve my English skills,” Rita shares. “Once I feel confident, I hope to pursue further education and continue contributing to my family and community.”
Rita’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Her journey of resilience, combined with her dedication to learning, reflects not only her personal goals but also her desire to create a better future for her children.
As Rita continues to overcome challenges, she stands as an inspiring example of perseverance and hope for many in the community.
