Bruce, NDIS participant, Footscray
Bruce, 60, from Footscray, is living a life full of independence and joy, thanks to the dedicated support he receives through WCIG’s NDIS program and his incredible team of support workers. With their help, Bruce has not only been able to manage his daily tasks he can also pursue his interests and maintain meaningful connections with his community.
One of the highlights of Bruce’s week was his work at Jigsaw in Abbotsford, where he helped prepare paper documents for being digitised, a job he excelled at. With the support of Francis, one of his key support workers, Bruce was able to commute confidently to and from work using public transport, a skill he enjoys and is adept at. Francis’ consistent support helped Bruce thrive in his role, enabling him to contribute meaningfully to the workplace.
Outside of work, Bruce’s support workers play a crucial role in his day-to-day life. Zac, another dedicated support worker, assists Bruce with essential tasks such as shopping, banking, and paying bills, empowering him to live independently and manage his own affairs.
Jacqui, another key support worker, plays an important role in helping Bruce to stay on top of his medical needs, takes Bruce to his specialist appointments and makes sure he enjoys trips to the Victoria Markets, where Bruce loves the vibrant atmosphere. All Bruce’s support workers are deeply valued by him; he often expresses his gratitude for their kindness, understanding, and the way they respect his preferences. In return, Bruce is always careful to treat his support workers well, acknowledging the strong bonds they’ve formed.
And, when Bruce is home completing his chores, such as cooking and washing, he leans on the beautiful music by Rhianna who keeps him motivated and energised.
Bruce’s social life is well supported through WCIG NDIS. His support team ensures that he can enjoy the activities he loves, including his weekly ten-pin bowling sessions where he consistently scores 3-4 strikes, where he stays connected and
makes many friends, something Bruce is naturally good at.
His support workers are also there to take him to the footy, where he enthusiastically supports his favourite AFL team, the Geelong Cats.
Bruce’s fondness for exploring the local community is also nurtured by his support team. Whether it’s enjoying coffee in Moonee Ponds and Sunshine, revisiting his old neighbourhoods in Coburg and Tottenham, or indulging his passion for shopping and wearing vibrant clothing, Bruce’s support workers are by his side, encouraging him to embrace his interests and hobbies.
Over the years, Bruce has held several jobs, from hospitality to office roles, and his team continues to support him in maintaining the independence that these experiences have given him. His love for cooking, especially his favourite dish, Chicken Parmigiana, is made easier with the help of his support workers, who assist him in the kitchen and ensure he can enjoy his meals.
WCIG’s NDIS program has been instrumental in helping Bruce lead a life filled with purpose, activity, and social engagement. The dedicated and compassionate care from his support workers enables Bruce to maintain his independence, navigate his daily challenges, and continue enjoying the things he loves most. From work and social activities to personal care and community involvement, Bruce’s story is a true reflection of how WCIG NDIS support can empower individuals to live a full, independent, and rewarding life.
