MEET JOANNE
Joanne, a 51-year-old single mother of four, is a shining example of resilience and determination. Despite facing health challenges and the impacts of domestic violence, Joanne has remained optimistic about her future and has successfully re-entered the workforce with renewed confidence.
Her journey with WCIG’s Disability Employment Services began in 2020 when she sought support to return to the workforce. She completed a Certificate III in Support Work through Alfie Institute that year, determined to build a career in individual support. However, along the way, Joanne faced personal and health obstacles, which temporarily slowed her progress. But her positive outlook never wavered.
After a period of medical exemptions, Joanne reconnected with her employment consultant in June 2024, attending face-to-face appointments to regain her confidence. With ongoing encouragement and guidance, Joanne felt empowered to take the next step and approach Banyule City Council for a support worker position.
In October 2024, Joanne’s perseverance paid off, and she secured the job. The role offers her an exciting opportunity to build a stable future, and she is already looking ahead at further education opportunities that could advance her career. Joanne is considering pursuing a Certificate IV in Disability Support or Individual Support, qualifications that will open even more doors in the sector.
Throughout her journey, Joanne has remained appreciative of the support she’s received from WCIG. Her respectfulness, gratitude, and positive attitude have made her a valued member of the community. Now, with her new job, Joanne is not only hopeful about her future but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance.
