WCIG is excited to announce that we have joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative, making our organisation more inclusive and supportive for everyone.
What is a Hidden Disability?
Hidden disabilities may include conditions such as:
-Mobility issues
-Mental health challenges
-Learning difficulties
-Speech impairments
-Visual impairments
-Hearing loss
Additionally, hidden disabilities can encompass respiratory and chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, chronic pain, and sleep disorders. These conditions may not be immediately apparent but can significantly impact daily life.
Understanding the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative was launched at Gatwick Airport in England in 2016. Its purpose is to provide a discreet way for individuals with hidden disabilities to indicate their need for support. The initiative has quickly gained global recognition and is now used in various public spaces, including transport, workplaces, and shops.
How It Works
Anyone with a hidden disability, their carer, or a loved one can wear a Sunflower product, such as a lanyard, pin, or wristband, to signal their need for assistance. This simple yet effective symbol helps others recognize and offer the necessary support without requiring the person to disclose their disability.
WCIG’s Commitment to Inclusivity
As a proud member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative, WCIG is now part of a global network committed to inclusivity. We believe in creating an environment where everyone feels understood and supported.
