MEET JERAHLEE
At just 27, Jerahlee from Brookfield is an inspiring example of resilience and determination. A proud Indigenous woman, Jerahlee’s journey has been marked by overcoming both personal and professional challenges, with the unwavering support of WCIG (Westgate Community Initiatives Group).
In 2019, Jerahlee came to WCIG seeking help in navigating a tough workplace environment. She experienced severe bullying, which led to intense anxiety, panic attacks, and a period of uncertainty about her future.
“I was a mess,” Jerahlee recalls. “I didn’t know how to quit, how to move forward, or even where to start.” The team at WCIG stood by her, offering not only practical assistance—such as writing a resignation letter and exploring new career paths—but also emotional support during her darkest moments. Jerahlee found herself in and out of psych wards, battling anxiety and depression, but remained committed to finding a new direction in life.
With WCIG’s help, she enrolled in a Pathology Collection course, regained her confidence, and successfully secured a role in a pathology lab. Despite working there for over three years, ongoing knee pain from long drives, between her home and work, and physically demanding work led her to reconsider her career path.
Returning to WCIG for assistance, Jerahlee expressed her interest in working for an organisation that aligned with her Indigenous values. The team helped her land a reception role at an Indigenous-focused agency, just steps away from WCIG’s Melton office. This position marked a new chapter for Jerahlee, giving her the opportunity to connect with her heritage and contribute to her local community.
While the transition to full-time work came with its challenges, including moments of self-doubt, Jerahlee has thrived in her new role. Her colleagues and managers at VACCA describe her as a dedicated, capable, and much-loved team member. Jerahlee herself is learning to embrace this newfound stability and success, knowing that she has earned her place.
Throughout her journey, Jerahlee has utilised WCIG’s services to the fullest—from job search assistance and confidence-building activities to ongoing emotional support. Her resilience and dedication to improving her life have paid off: she is now saving for a house deposit with her partner and continues to grow as a role model for others in her community.
Jerahlee’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and a determination to overcome obstacles, it’s possible to turn life’s challenges into opportunities for growth and success.
