Setting Sights on Career in Criminology

13/11/2024

MEET KAYLA

Kayla, a young woman who spent many years in kinship care while growing up, is proving that resilience and determination can shape a bright future. Despite the challenges she faced growing up in care, Kayla is now taking steps towards achieving her dream of becoming a homicide detective.

Kayla, who completed Year 11, has worked in various roles since leaving high school but always had her sights set on further education. With a passion for criminology, she will soon be enrolling part-time in a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice through Griffith University. This flexible study arrangement will allow her to continue working at her part-time job while pursuing her long-term career goals.

Referred to the Better Futures program by Child Protection, Kayla became eligible for support through a Care by Secretary Order. The program has provided vital assistance, helping her transition from court-ordered care to independent living. As part of her journey, Kayla has received funding to cover housing-related expenses and medical costs, applied for rental properties with support, and been referred to housing services. Additionally, she has received assistance in obtaining her driver’s license and purchasing a car—steps that have greatly contributed to her growing independence.

Kayla’s dedication to Better Futures is evident. She remains actively engaged with the program and has embraced the opportunities it offers to work towards her goals. WCIG, through the Better Futures program, has supported Kayla every step of the way, helping her lay the foundation for a successful career in criminology.

With her ambition, work ethic, and the continued support of her community, Kayla is well on her way to turning her aspirations into reality. Her story is an inspiring example of how young people, even when faced with adversity, can achieve greatness with the right support and determination.
