Certificate I in English as an Additional Language (EAL) (22638VIC) is an entry-level* course for beginners who wish to learn English. This course is ideal if you are from a non-English speaking background, who would like to improve their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course will help you to develop employment and living skills, knowledge of Australian society and strategies for successful transition into work or further study in Australia.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for the program; however, you will be required to complete a Pre-Training Review and LLN assessment to determine which level of EAL is appropriate for you.
Assessment Methods
Assessment occurs using a variety of methods to identify essential skills and knowledge acquired during the training. These methods may include:
- Questioning (verbal or written)
- Product Based Method (portfolio, listening text/written answers, reading text, spoken text)
- Direct Observation (role play, discussions)
Delivery Mode
Face to face and blended. For blended delivery, additional requirements include access to a laptop or desktop, Adobe Reader, the Microsoft Office package, and an internet browser.

Education Pathways
As per the ACSF, the exit level of 22638VIC Certificate 1 in EAL (Access) of ACSF 2 is considered a beginner, pre-frequency level of English. Further EAL study is most likely required for employment or study pathways requiring more than a very basic level of English. After achieving this qualification candidates may consider:
– 22639VIC Certificate II in EAL (Access)
