MEET JACOB
At just 23, Jacob has already transformed his life in remarkable ways, demonstrating the power of resilience and support. Joining WCIG in February 2022, Jacob fully embraced services offered through the Disability Employment Services program and began full-time employment as a Warehouse Assistant at Pacific Components shortly after.
Jacob’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Initially grappling with Autism, anxiety, and depression, he faced concentration limitations, confidence issues, and social interaction difficulties. However, he tackled these obstacles head-on, demonstrating remarkable perseverance that significantly boosted his confidence and determination.
With the assistance of WCIG, Jacob crafted a professional resume and cover letter, enhancing his ability to present his skills to potential employers. He also received interview coaching, which prepared him for job interviews and improved his confidence in highlighting his strengths. He also engaged in Employment Skills Training (EST), which allowed Jacob to not only gain valuable job-seeking skills but also enjoy meeting new people and explore his career interests.
Throughout this process, Jacob focused on building his confidence, crucial for overcoming his social anxiety and enhancing his professional prospects. WCIG supported him in navigating Centrelink to manage his administrative needs and even accompanied him into shops to help him become more comfortable in social settings.
Jacob’s positive experiences with EST and his newfound clarity about his career goals led him to pursue a path in the Disability Employment Services (DES) industry.
Jacob now lives independently with his cousins in a rental property, supported by his partner, Jack, and reflects his dedication to making a positive impact in his chosen field.
Jacob’s journey illustrates the transformative power of support and determination. His collaboration with WCIG has been marked by enthusiasm and receptiveness to creative solutions. His ability to embrace innovative approaches has equipped him with the tools needed to navigate his career path successfully.
Always respectful, courteous, and appreciative of the support he has received, Jacob has become a vocal advocate for WCIG’s services. He serves as a role model in the community, demonstrating that challenges can lead to triumph. His story is a powerful reminder that with perseverance, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their personal goals.Â
